the cove
I am sitting overlooking the small cove of Porthgwarra in West Penwith, Cornwall. It is a relaxing scene, small wavelets are washing up on the sandy shore beneath the slipway, where two tiny fishing boats are resting. A cove like this is a harbour, a place of safety, security.
This is something which we humans yearn for: a feeling of safety, that feeling of security. We look for it in many ways, but ultimately, that feeling can only come when we have returned to the essence, when we are residing once more in that place within us which is incorruptible. Then there is nothing to fear, for no harm can come to our essence. Everything else is transitory, everything else is like the choppy sea. We are thrown around like flotsam, not really in control of the happenstances of our life. But returning to our core, coming back to who we really are – our true nature, our essence – it is like coming into a cove, like Porthgwarra here. Suddenly the sea becomes calm. We have escaped from the frenzy of the open ocean, and we can relax. We are no longer fighting life. We are no longer struggling against it. We no longer fear being dragged under. Here in the sheltered cove we can float effortlessly, without any worries. This is where we once again can enjoy life without anxiety, without stress, just pure enjoyment.
So come back to that sheltered cove within yourself, come back to your essence.
